Jerry James is an artist and educator based in New York City. He works in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, photography, and music production. He currently teaches in the graduate school of education at the School of Visual Arts and at his art studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. An advocate for innovative and equitable arts education, Jerry designs and facilitates workshops for teachers, students, and families around the world. Prior experiences include teaching at The Museum of Modern Art and Columbia University, and directing the Department of Teaching and Learning at the Center for Arts Education.
Jerry has an M.F.A. in painting from Yale University and an Ed.D. in Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. He is a recipient of The Ely Harwood Schless Memorial Prize for Painting from Yale University and The Dean’s Award for Outstanding Teaching from Columbia University. Since 2015, Jerry has served on the Executive Committee of the New York State Blue Ribbon Commission for the Arts.
